The fear of needles is one of the top reasons why people feel hesitant about having acupuncture treatments. But for acupuncturists like myself who know the many benefits of acupuncture, the fear of needles should not be a factor. Here are some reasons why you can still have acupuncture treatments even if you’re afraid of needles.
The needles are very thin
Unlike the needles used for giving blood or taking injections, these needles do not have a hollow point. In comparison, acupuncture needles are approximately 4 times thicker than a human hair. To get an up-close look at an acupuncture needle, have a look at this link. You will notice just how fine these needles are. In fact, they could be referred to as pins rather than needles.
The right acupuncturist will ensure your comfort
With over 25 years of experience and up to date training, I am well aware of the techniques that cause the least amount of pain. The fear of needles is not uncommon to me. I’ve treated many clients who have expressed this fear to me. If you want to let me know about your fear before your first treatment, I’d be happy to chat with you in hopes that your fears can be kept at bay. I may also suggest alternative treatments that do not involve needles. Which leads me to my next point.
Acupuncture is not just about needles
There are a number of alternatives to the traditional method of acupuncture using needles. Such alternatives include: lasers, moxibustion, electric point stimulation and acupressure. None of these approaches involves the use of needles to your treatments. In addition, when you receive acupuncture treatments, you will receive lifestyle recommendations such as medicinal herbs and healing exercises. These recommendations will help complement your treatments between your treatments. When you meet with me, I’ll give you recommendations that are specific to your goals and treatment plan.
You may start to enjoy your acupuncture treatments
It’s likely that you may need to get used to your treatments before seeing results and truly benefiting from them. During this period of adjustment, you may start to enjoy those treatments. A number of my patients have found acupuncture treatments to be relaxing. The acupuncture needles play a big role in restoring the flow of qi which thereby encourage a greater sense of well being. When you experience these benefits, your fear of needles may dissolve and you’ll start to have treatments on a consistent basis.
When people come to me for acupuncture treatments, it’s because they want to resolve a certain health issue or improve their overall quality of life. The fear of needles can put an unwanted form of stress, further adding to the health complications you’re trying to resolve. Let’s focus on why you came to see me in the first place so that you can be on the road to healing! I hope I helped you feel less apprehensive about the needles involved in acupuncture treatments.
